Watch: Tir Chonaill Gaels host fun-filled day of ceol and craic in London

first_imgThe sixth annual London Irish Vintage Club Charity day took place this week, hosted by Tir Chonaill Gaels in Greenford.It’s been a big year for the Donegal community in England’s capital as the London branch of the Donegal Association celebrated their 70th anniversary this year, and the Glencolmcille Folk Village made the trip over to celebrate its 50th anniversary at the family fun day.Thousands traveled from all over Britain to attend the day which boasted a wide variety of events catering for all interests. There was ample opportunity for Irish natives to showcase talents, with traditional crafts, sheep shearing, vintage truck displays and jiving competitions but to name a few of the activities on offer.Donegal woman Margaret Cunningham, manager of Glencolmcille Folk Village said; “I can’t really describe the feeling, it’s just immense, I don’t think you’d even get this feeling in Ireland!“It just feels like going back in time, everyone is so generous and really pleased to see what we’re doing, keeping the traditions alive and we’re having a great time. “It was an Irish man from our parish in Glencolmcille, Peter McGinley who lives here, he sponsored us to come so we feel privileged and we wanted to show people what’s alive and kicking back in Donegal.”Set up in 1967, Glencolmcille Folk Village, also known as Father McDyer’s Folk Village Museum, allows visitors to step back in time and experience daily life as it was in times long ago. Thatched cottages sit along the hillside of Glen Bay Beach, containing artifacts and utensils our ancestors would have used.Singer Natasha Magee says; “If you can see people out there enjoying the music you’re singing it’s really heartwarming. It’s a fantastic day, there’s so much going on.”The 2018 Calendar which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Glencolmcille Folk Village was also promoted, with the funds raised through the sales of the calendar going towards Donegal Hospice.Kerry man Sean Moriarty, the Secretary of London Irish Motor Club says that he brought his love of motorsport with him when he emigrated, and says it’s a great day that allows the Irish community to come together.Video credit: Mark Quinn.
