Doping scandal roils another sport: Dogsledding

first_imgIt was the first time since the race instituted drug testing in 1994 that a test came back positive.Seavey strongly denied giving any banned substances to his dogs, suggesting instead that he may have been the victim of sabotage by another musher or an animal rights activist. That means he will keep his titles and his $59,000 in winnings this year. But the finding was another blow to the Iditarod, which has seen the loss of major sponsors, numerous dog deaths, attacks on competitors and pressure from animal rights activists, who say huskies are run to death or left with severe infections and bloody paws. LATEST STORIES Japan ex-PM Nakasone who boosted ties with US dies at 101 “Unfortunately I do think another musher is an option,” he said. He added: “There are also people who are not fans of mushing as a whole. They are numerous videos out that are trying to say mushing is a bad thing. And I can see somebody doing this to promote their agenda.”Seavey said whoever gave the drug to the dogs knew it would cause a positive test, and “that should make me and my people the least likely suspect.”Earlier this year, the Iditarod lost a major corporate backer, Wells Fargo, and race officials accused animal rights organizations of pressuring the bank and other sponsors with “manipulative information” about the treatment of the dogs.Five dogs connected to this year’s race died, bringing total deaths to more than 150 in the Iditarod’s 44-year history, according to PETA’s count. And last year, two mushers were attacked by a drunken man on a snowmobile in separate assaults near a remote village. One dog was killed and others were injured.Seavey said he has withdrawn from next year’s race in protest and expects the Iditarod Trail Committee to ban him anyway for speaking out. Mushers are prohibited from criticizing the race or sponsors.Iditarod spokesman Chas St. George said a ban would be up to the committee’s board of directors. The committee decided to release Seavey’s name after scores of competitors demanded it. Race officials initially refused, saying it was unlikely they could prove the competitor acted intentionally.During this year’s race, the rules on doping essentially said that to punish a musher, race officials had to provide proof of intent. The rules have since been changed to hold mushers liable for any positive drug test unless they can show something beyond their control happened.Wade Marrs, president of the Iditarod Official Finishers Club, said he doesn’t believe Seavey intentionally administered the drugs. He said he believes the musher has too much integrity and intelligence to do such a thing.“I don’t really know what to think at the moment,” Marrs said. “It’s a very touchy situation.” /jpv QC cops nab robbery gang leader, cohort Thunder’s Paul George prepares to face former team Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. I wouldn’t think so.”Still, he said discussions are underway to increase security at the dog lot in Nome and at various checkpoints.Seavey won the annual Anchorage-to-Nome trek in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and has had nine straight top 10 finishes. He finished second this year to his father, Mitch, who collected a first-place prize of $71,250.Dogs are subject to random testing before and during the race, and the first 20 teams to cross the finish line are all automatically tested.“I did not give a drug to my dog. I’ve never used a banned substance in the race,” the 30-year-old Seavey said in an interview. He said tramadol is not used at his kennel, and it is “incredibly unlikely” it was accidentally administered by anyone on his team.Instead, he complained of inadequate security at checkpoints along the route where dog food is dropped off weeks ahead of time and at the dog lot in Nome, where thousands of huskies are kept after the race before they are flown home. FBI probe docs list range of payments to top college basketball players

Line items in four pages of documents released by Yahoo showed a wide range, including some five-figure payments and two dinners for less than $40 each.Don Jackson, an Alabama-based attorney who has worked on numerous college eligibility cases, said the root of the problem is that the NCAA’s model of amateurism doesn’t work.“This problem can be solved if players are compensated,” Jackson said. “The NCAA is not capable of adequately policing tens of thousands of athletes around the country.”A balance sheet from December 2015 lists several payments under “Loan to Players,” including $43,500 to Dallas Mavericks guard Dennis Smith, who played one season at North Carolina State in 2016-17. Bland is accused of receiving a $13,000 bribe for steering the team’s players to Dawkins and a financial adviser when they became professionals. We did everything possible so Ousmane could arrive at (main team) in the best possible conditions.”By the time he was 17, Dembele had already made his first-team debut in the French league, scoring his first goal as a professional in a match against Girondins only two weeks after his debut. In his two seasons as a professional in with the club from northern France, Dembele played 78 matches, scoring 22 goals and setting up 25 others. He became a top prospect for European clubs, and Borussia Dortmund signed him last year in a transfer worth 15 million euros (about $16.7 at the time). He scored six goals and set up 13 others in 32 Bundesliga games, turning into Barcelona’s top target the moment Neymar left for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth more than 220 million euros ($260 million).Neymar had arrived as a possible successor to Messi, and when he left, the club had to find someone else to take on that difficult desk.Dembele, who will wear Neymar’s former No. 11 jersey, became Barcelona’s most expensive transfer ever, costing 105 million euros ($124 million) plus possible add-ons that could increase the value up to 40 percent of the original fee. Rennes will be entitled to about 40 million euros ($47.2 million) of the amount paid to Dortmund, meaning he’s also the club’s biggest transfer all-time.“The market has been shooting up in the last few days. Early in the second half, he picked up a loose ball on defense and flicked it past England defender Kyle Walker — one of the quickest in the Premier League — and left him trailing on a pulsating 60-meter run toward the goal.Although slight in build, Dembele has huge upper-body strength, enabling him to ride heavy challenges and use his body to hold off opponents running alongside him. He is a constant threat with his assists, and can play well on both flanks of the field and through the middle.“You can’t tell if he’s right-footed or left-footed, he can strike with both feet,” Julien Stephan, Dembele’s coach in Rennes’ reserve team, said in an interview on the club’s website. “He’s a great competitor and he is not bothered by the pressure. The CBI, repeatedly pulled up by the SC, may become more prompt, objective and politically neutral.Over the years, most organisations of governance have lost their sense of accountability. In the bureaucracy, the mindless operation of Parkinson’s Law leads to the dilution of responsibility for performance. Our judicial system is among the slowest in the world. When mega-events like the Commonwealth Games take place, no single person or organisation is held responsible for the end result. The Games is a classic case of administrative non-accountability.Corrective action will mean replacing Article 311 of the Constitution which guarantees cast-iron job security for public servants through a rolling contract system. While social justice is important, action against the corrupt must not be delayed on account of caste considerations. The roles and goals at every level of government must be clearly defined. An output-based or performance-based budget must become the norm in every government department. In short, a simple 2T mantra of Transparency and TINA (there is no alternative) factor must be adopted. Only TINA can keep vested interests of politicians in check. This will ensure that all decisions are taken in the public interest. This 2T must and can be achieved by the intelligent use of information technology and the Right to Information Act.In this era of economic liberalisation, the best guarantee against corporate lobbying and crony capitalism is the setting up of independent regulatory agencies. In the early days of telecom liberalisation in 1997, an independent-minded retired high court judge headed the telecom regulator, TRAI. The political leadership found this inconvenient and adopted the drastic solution of scrapping TRAI and replacing it with a more pliable body. To avoid such mischief, the best solution is to make the regulatory bodies so strong that the tina factor would intervene and political manoeuvering of the body be contained.Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. And also good governance.- Vittal is a former central vigilance commissionerlast_img read more

Gupta, a third year B.Com (Hons) student of the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), University of Delhi, was among the lucky ones picked for campus placement by investment and consultancy behemoths such as Citibank, Deutsche Bank, Future First, McKinsey, KPMG, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Annual salaries can zoom up to Rs 36 lakh and even the average is at Rs 10.5 lakh per year. Which explains why SRCC has topped the INDIA TODAY-Nielsen Best Colleges Survey for commerce, followed by St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and Loyola College, Chennai. For complete Best Colleges list click hereFor P.C. Jain, principal, SRCC, such honours are routine. Every year, Jain bids goodbye to several talented students, receives thousands of stellar applications for admission and selects the best among the best. But this year, because of the change in admission procedure, only those who could apply came. The college was able to admit 640 students in commerce and 148 in economics.”For the past 40 years, we have been striving to bring commerce education at par with the coveted medicine and engineering courses. When we announced the 100 per cent cut off, we knew students would be able to fit the bill,” says Jain. This year, the cut off for admission into the commerce stream for non-commerce students was 100 per cent. Even though it came as a shock for many, SRCC received a record number of applications even before the second cut off was announced. This time, the college admitted a record 413 students for its two courses.advertisementThe college now aims to provide a more professional experience to its students at the undergraduate level. Jain calls this “a more industry-oriented course”. Apart from regular classes, SRCC organises regular industry visits and invites corporates for inter personal interactions with students. Mehak Nanner, a second year commerce students says, “We had a video conference with Citibank CEO Vikram Pandit this year. He told us the advantages of working in the commerce industry.” The college has a 1:12 teacher-student ratio with 108 faculty members. Also, all the classes have LCD screens and most theory papers are taught through the audio-visual medium. The fully air-conditioned college today boasts of a Rs 40-crore sports facility with a basketball court, four badminton courts with a spa and a cafeteria, which will be functional for students from this academic year. Clearly, academics is not the only priority. One of the most active and effective societies at SRCC is Students in Free Enterprise, which works for entrepreneurship among the most underprivileged sections of society.Attracting top recruiters, St. Xavier’s, Kolkata, stresses overall development.St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, is placed second in this year’s survey. “Its committed faculty, a united community of students and an apolitical atmosphere makes St. Xavier’s what it is today,” says Rev. J. Felix Raj SJ, principal, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Of course, placement in top multinational corporations is another reason the college attracts hundreds of applicants each year. Tata Consultancy Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Wipro and IBM are just a few of the mammoth corporations that recruit from campus each year. With 12 societies such as the Bengali Literary Society, Xavierian’s Theatrical Society and 19 committees such as the Dress Code Committee and Internal Quality Assessment Committee, as well as outreach programmes for students, the college has rightly acquired second position. The college has also managed to set its curriculum and teaching methods to suit international standards.NINETY-ONE AND NOT DONEIn early 1920, seven leading businessmen from Delhi established the Commercial Education Trust and Commercial School became the first school to be set up under it.The school introduced a post-matriculation diploma programme in commerce under the supervision of R.K.Kumar, who later became the first principal of Commercial College, after its affiliation to the University of Delhi in 1926. In 1932, the college was upgraded to the status of a degree college. In 1951, it converted itself into one specialising in commerce and economics streams. It was also rechristened as SRCC.”The curriculum is more student-oriented. It gives personal attention to students,” says the principal. The multi-disciplinary Loyola College, Chennai, has been ranked No 3 this year. The college doesn’t focus only on business studies and strategy but also overall development of leadership qualities among students. The college has two international exchange programmes and has signed international memorandum of understanding with 33 universities abroad. “The objective is not just for students to learn functional subjects of commerce, but also to engage in holistic development to be industry-ready,” says Francis Jose, head of commerce department, Loyola College, Chennai.advertisement”Apart from this, we are also working on infusing sciences in commerce so that if commerce students want to start a business in a scientific stream they can easily understand the needs and specifications,” says Jose. They have also launched the Loyola 2025 future plan in their centenary year. With continuous infrastructural development and revision of syllabus, no wonder students flock to the Loyola campus every year.last_img read more

Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai wedding attracts media frenzy

In another world, this would have been anything but the perfect match. She is going to be 34 this year, he turns 31 next month. She is India’s best known beauty ambassador, he has only now started breathing the rarefied air of self-starting stardom. She has been in two painful and public relationships with men who behaved badly, he has been let down by one of Bollywood’s pedigreed princesses after a much-celebrated engagement. She is a loner who has learnt not to trust too many people, his array of buddies is as long as it is distinguished by its code of loyalty. And yet.Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan did meet, not once but several times, before love struck, setting the stage for a marriage which seems as much a merger of two powerful bling bling brands (one famous abbreviated first name, Ash, and a last name that opens every made-in-India door, Bachchan) as it is a union of two loving hearts. When he is shooting in her neighbourhood, he asks her to send him some “healthy food”; when she is feeling neglected by a movie’s publicists, she is quite happy to seek his help. When he needs to leave a party, he just nods to her across a room; when she wants some advice on endorsements, she simply borrows his business manager. And like all professionals who are in the same business, they gossip: about co-stars, directors and even journalists.advertisementWhen it was finally announced to the media last week, predictably by the patriarch who is itching to anoint his son, the engagement sparked off a frenzy of speculation that encompassed every conceivable tabloid detail: what to call them (Ab-ash, Ash-ab, Abhi-warya, or Shek-ash?), what the bride would wear, where the couple would live, what the child would look like, would she work, hey, would it work?Amitabh Bachchan, who has been unusually forthcoming both about his reaction to his son’s performance in Mani Ratnam’s Guru as well as his happiness at the engagement, says his son’s choice is “our choice”. He says Rai’s “inner beauty is greater than her more renowned outer one. She is a simple, warm and endearing person, and we all love her.” As for when and how they will be married, he says, “North, south, east, west, in the air, under water, in space. It really is of no consequence. So long as they are together that’s all that matters”.THE POWER OF TWOThe Rs 18-crore Guru has been a critical success, so it appears that the No. 1 bachelor and the No. 1 bachelorette are also a viable business proposition. Here are some of their joint ventures.A Still from the movie GuruMOVIES Ram Gopal Varma has signed them on in Sarkar 2. But their solo releases are Jhoom Barabar and Drona for him, and Provoked, Jodha-Akbar and Last Legion for her. They will also be doing Karan Johar’s production for Tarun Mansukhani.ENDORSEMENTS He promotes four brands (Rs 4.5 crore is his asking rate) as does she (her rate is Rs 3.5 crore).CELEBRITY VALUE A new study by MindShare says her mScore (number of people for whom the celebrity is a favourite) is 67 and his is 56.DOUBLE DEAL Kajol and Ajay Devgan are the highest earning couple at Rs 3.5 crore per endorsement. Post marriage, Bachchan and Rai are expected to be approached by homemaker and luxury brands. If only. In the fey world of advertising, number-crunchers have already gone into a huddle, calculating the escalating value of the addition to the House of Bachchans, the new power triangle-father, son and daughter-in-law. In the even more fickle world of movies, filmmakers are scrabbling around for joint projects.Among Mumbai-Delhi’s society singletons, a wail has gone up: two beautiful, eligible players out of the game. It’s a game they both know well by now. Bachchan has seen it since he was born, learning how to say and do the right thing perhaps from birth-he was, after all, the youngest person to attend the premiere of Hindi cinema’s greatest action epic, Sholay, with Jaya Bachchan being pregnant at the time.Rai has learnt it the hard way, finding herself ostracised by her once-generous patrons, the three Khans, when she didn’t follow the faux family rules established for Bollywood’s good little girls, who play coy with ‘Yash Uncle’ and check everything with mummy.advertisementTheir relationship was not an overnight success. When they first met, on the sets of Raj Kanwar’s Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, in 1999, Bachchan was a struggling actor, with a predilection for pranks and Bollywood’s then reigning queen as a girlfriend. She was Miss World, with Bollywood’s best projects, a penchant for poised professionalism, and a gorgeous but unhinged beau. The next time they met professionally was in 2003.The film, Kuch Naa Kaho, was the second to co-star Bachchan and Rai- who stepped in only after fiance Karisma Kapur refused to do it. Rai’s then boyfriend Salman Khan was a regular and ultra possessive visitor to the sets in Mumbai’s Film City, even offering to play the part of the missing husband, provided director Rohan Sippy changed the ending and made Rai walk into the sunset with him rather than Bachchan-Salman loved the denouement so much that he used it in his much later movie, Jaan-E-Mann. Sippy’s original ending stayed, Khan didn’t do the role but disrupted several shoots and the film underwhelmed at the box office, just as Dhai Akshar Prem Ke did in 2000.That would have been that, but for Aditya Chopra, the man who controls the destinies of half of Bollywood’s actors-with the other half hoping to get there. He insisted that Rai perform an item song in Bunty Aur Babli in 2005, in exchange for a re-entry into the Yash Raj camp. Rai had worked on Chopra’s Mohabbatein in 2000 but was ousted from dad Yash Chopra’s Veer-Zaara when star Shah Rukh Khan refused to work with her.The song, Kajra re, a luscious green chilly stuck in the middle of a masala movie, triggered an interest between Bachchan and Rai, which became more than that when both of them-with dad Amitabh in tow-performed the number at the IIFA that year to a riotous crowd in Amsterdam. Then followed the chance to act in Sippy’s Bluffmaster together in September 2005, which Rai lost out on by not getting back to the director in time. The role went to an eager Priyanka Chopra. But then before Chopra could even begin on her Urdu lessons, Rai has snagged J.P. Dutta’s Umrao Jaan, opposite Bachchan, from right under her nose.DATELINE ABHISHEKWith a strong woman like Jaya Bachchan running the household, it’s no surprise that Bachchan has never been afraid of older, more successful womenKARISMA KAPUR: He dated the 33-year old actor for seven years but the engagement, announced by the family at Bachchan Senior’s birthday in 2002, was called off soon after.DIPANNITA SHARMA: The model was one of the women he is said to have dated, but never confirmed. Who-is-Abhishek dating? became a tabloid sport that the actor responded to either with a polite silence or a stern reprimand.DATELINE AISHWARYARai appeared to be quite a messed-up man junkie, despite being completely in charge of her professional lifeSALMAN KHAN: They met on the sets of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and dated till 2002 when she broke off because he was abusive towards her.VIVEK OBEROI: The actor dated Rai but was never acknowledged except as a friend. He mounted a public defence of Rai against Salman Khan in an embarrassing meltdown relayed live on TV in 2003.advertisementTheir third film together, Umrao Jaan, began in December 2005. He was unencumbered and she was tiring of Vivek Oberoi, who with each passing statement and dud movie seemed unworthy of her-if Salman had abused her, she felt Oberoi was using her, gifting puppies and planning marriage within media earshot. Ironically, their relationship had blossomed while on the outdoor shoot in Coorg of Sameer Karnik’s Kyun! Ho Gaya Na, a movie which co-starred Bachchan Senior who was witness to the bonhomie between the two sets of parents who also visited the sets. But in Jaipur, where Umrao Jaan was being shot, away from the distractions of Mumbai, Rai bonded with Bachchan over shared meals and movies (Rai would watch Dutta’s older movies at the mini-theater in the hotel in the desire to understand the director’s style) during a two-month shoot. Rai, unused to working with the mercurial Dutta (who admits the film was no picnic), would often rush to Bachchan, more experienced at handling the filmmaker’s mood swings, having worked with him twice before.Aishwarya Rai with Amitabh BachchanBy February last year, Bachchan’s birthday, it was official-the new prince of Bollywood and India’s uncrowned Global Goddess were together. On the cloistered sets of Guru in Badami, Chennai and Madurai, the relationship became closer-even on the one day off in the week, Bachchan would have to spend at least eight hours doing make-up tests. He would also need company while endlessly stuffing his face with fatty foods to put on 11 kg for the role. Dutta, who has observed them closely, believes, “both are responsible, focused, committed and don’t take relationships lightly. He’s all heart and she’s a great balance of head and heart. More than that, it’s a union of two extremely cultured families”.Nothing in the Bachchan household- whose idea of night-time entertainment is to read the day’s newspapers clippings mentioning the family name-is ever done without a grand plan. For Bachchan Senior, 2006 was a year of rude shocks. His sudden illness forced a temporary retreat from movies, an abrupt and eventually final end to Kaun Banega Crorepati, while his son’s career sputtered.Click here to EnlargeA fine but low key performance in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was followed by a dead-inthe-water Umrao Jaan and a gawker’s role in Dhoom 2, a blockbuster that belonged to Hrithik Roshan. In a capricious industry, where an actor is known only by the numbers of his opening weekend, Guru was crucial to his career, especially following Bachchan Senior’s own dismal Baghban. So while his son and girlfriend flew to Toronto and New York to dazzle the diaspora at back-to-back premieres, the father held fort, virtually willing the box office, with a raft of television interviews, to vindicate his stamp of critical approval. It did respectably enough for the engagement to be declared to the media, with surprised friends frantically SMSing each other the news and disbursing details at Karan Johar’s screening of Mira Nair’s The Namesake for friends the next day.But now that the last flute of Moet et Chandon has been quaffed at the engagement party at Jalsa that lasted till 4 a.m. even as the media thronged outside, what happens to the happy couple? Astrologers are not the only experts predicting the future, which the Bachchans seem to be in an overdrive to appease, having visited the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi and the Siddhivinayak temple in Mumbai. Rai did her own pilgrimages at Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti’s dargah in Ajmer and the Brahma temple in Pushkar.TRADITION BOUND: The Bachchans with Aishwarya Rai at a Varanasi templeIn a new study of how consumers relate to celebrities, conducted across 14 locations and administered to 2,800 respondents, MindShare, a division of the media giant GroupM, found that Rai had a higher ‘mScore’ than Bachchan, which means the number of people for whom she was a favourite was higher (Rai’s mScore was 67, and Bachchan’s 56). She was No. 4 and he was No. 7 in the list of celebrities (who else but Bachchan Senior was No. 1, followed by Sachin Tendulkar and Shah Rukh Khan) but both were found to have almost similar ‘personas’, which is an aggregate of attributes used to measure the fit between a brand and a celebrity. She is seen to be sympathetic, outgoing and thorough. He is sympathetic, outgoing and thorough. She is seen as more playful. And he is seen as more sensible. He endorses four brands (Omega, Motorola, LG and Amex) as does she (Coca-Cola, DTC, L’Oreal and Longines). His current asking price for endorsements is Rs 4.5 crore, hers is Rs 3.5 crore. Since he works mostly with friends, his price per movie is difficult to determine. Hers is Rs 2 crore per film. What does the future hold for her? Sippy believes Rai’s performance in Guru is her finest so far and that it’s a new beginning for her. Of late, though, Rai has cut down on her travel-not even going to London to dub in Hindi for Jagmohan Mundhra’s Provoked, a movie which has a breakthrough performance by her.Click here to EnlargeThe two would clearly love to spend more time together-Rai was heard complaining as the promotions for Guru were ending that they won’t be able to now, as she completes a grueling shoot for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodha-Akbar and he wraps up childhood buddy Goldie Behl’s Drona, co-starring his mother and Priyanka (Piggy Chops) Chopra. But coming up in August is a three-month world tour across Europe, America and the Far East organized by Wizcraft where the two Bachchans and Rai (will it be the three Bachchans by then?) will be the star attractions. It’s unlikely that Rai will switch off from movies immediately. Ask Bachchan Senior, who has virtually appointed himself the couple’s spokesman, whether the industry is now more accepting of married female actors, and he says: “I have never had a problem with it.” As for Bachchan, he and Hrithik Roshan are clearly the stars of tomorrow.Bachchan’s versatility as an actor has meant he has no one fixed image which in this day of formula-busting is an advantage for filmmakers while Roshan, the boy whose car pool he shared when they were both at Bombay Scottish, is a glamor boy with acting muscles. But while Bachchan is not able to command more than Rs 2 crore a movie, Roshan’s price has rocketed to Rs 10 crore per picture after the Adlabs deal. Not just that, Rupa underwear has just signed Roshan for a three-year, Rs 18-crore contract, which added to the other once-and-future rival Shah Rukh Khan’s Rs 12 crore fee for Don, makes Bachchan Senior somewhat nervous about his son’s future. For now though the post-engagement revelry continues in the spotlight. The brand will be showcased again soon, along with Rai, at the French Embassy in Delhi when Bachchan Senior is given the Officier de la Legion d’honneur, France’s highest civilian honour. It will be yet another occasion for the media to exploit and for the Bachchans to satiate the unending hunger for news about them. Both are bound to oblige.last_img read more
