McIlroy wastes fast start, rues ‘opportunity lost’ at British Open

A player who was racked with self-doubt when 5 over after six holes on Thursday was now 4 under for the tournament and only three shots off the lead on Saturday. There was that familiar bounce in his step. There was a buzz around the course, with McIlroy suddenly in contention. Could this be the beginning of a charge seen so often by the four-time major winner?FEATURED STORIESSPORTSEnd of his agony? His approach to No. 8 was short of the green and another loose pitch, to 12 feet, cost him another shot. Then came the 10th hole, where it all went wrong. McIlroy acknowledged he took the wrong club off the tee, pulling a 3-iron into a pot bunker even though he knew he could eliminate the traps with a 1-iron or lay up with a 4-iron. He splashed out into another bunker, about 10 yards ahead, and could hit out only to the left of the green. He wound up with a double-bogey 6.“I’ve always been good, when I get off to fast starts, being able to keep it going,” he said, “and I didn’t today. And I needed to.”A 1-under 69 just didn’t cut it on a day of perfect conditions when Branden Grace was shooting 62 — the lowest ever score at a major — and Jordan Spieth and Matt Kuchar were shooting 65 and 66, respectively, in the final group.McIlroy will start the final round on 2 under and nine shots off Spieth, the leader.“I definitely feel like today was an opportunity lost to get right in the mix going into tomorrow,” McIlroy said.ADVERTISEMENT Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. If you keep it in play, it’s almost hard to make a bogey out there.”That was McIlroy’s problem. He had just 43 percent accuracy off the tee and he didn’t hole enough putts on the back nine.Sloppy swings and silly errors have been part of McIlroy’s game for some time now. He arrived at Birkdale having missed the cut at three of his previous four tournaments, while the error-strewn start to his first round virtually ruled him out of contention for a second claret jug.He said he is struggling with right-to-left shots, and has been working on simplifying his putting routine after getting “bogged down in technical thoughts.”McIlroy hasn’t won a major since the U.S. PGA Championship in 2014 — a streak of 10 — and doesn’t have a victory in 2017, in which he had two separate spells out with a rib injury.“It’s not quite where I need it to be to win the biggest golf tournaments in the world,” McIlroy said. “But it’s getting there.”Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy reacts to a missed putt during the third round of the British Open Golf Championship, at Royal Birkdale, Southport, England, Saturday July 22, 2017. ‘Police-Absence Creates Insecurity’: Chris Massaquoi Summoned

first_imgJust days after announcing how robust the 3rd sitting of the House of Representatives will be, Police Director Chris Massaquoi has been singled out as this sitting’s first ‘casualty.’The House of Representatives Thursday, 16 January voted 16 for, and 15 against, in a motion to summon the Police Chief.Accordingly, the intent of Director Massaquoi’s summons is to allow him to account for “limited, or no police presence in many parts of rural Liberia.”His summons was predicated on a communication address to plenary of the House by Lofa County Representative Moses Y. Kollie.Rep. Kollie noted in his communication that he observed the low presence and, in some cases, no presence, of police officers in both Salayea and Zorzor Districts of Lofa County.“The issue of low police visibility in District #5 is not unique to this district; it includes the entire Lofa County which has stirred a measure of insecurity for our people whenever there is a crisis,” Rep. Kollie said.He blamed the lack of “motivation, promotion in rank, a lack of higher education, financial benefits and no care and concern on the part of senior administration as some of the conditions responsible for the situation.According to Rep. Kollie, police officers continued to abandon rural assignments and return to Monrovia for a variety of reasons; in the process, they leave rural Liberians vulnerable to criminals.Based on these concerns, Rep. Kollie pleaded with his colleagues to summon the Police chief in an effort to ascertain first hand, what underlies the situation leading to a scarcity of officers across the country.Rep. Kollie’s communication received support from many of his colleagues including Maryland and Bong County Rep., Isaac Roland and Edward Kafia; the two supported Massaquoi’s appearance but wanted committees to handle the matter instead of plenary (full body). However, Nimba County Rep. Larry Younquoi’s motion to invite the Police boss before plenary was later accepted, Massaquoi is expected to make his first appearance before the Legislature since his last fallout with the Liberian Senate, in  late 2013. Following that misunderstanding, the Senate recommended that President Sirleaf dismissed the Police Chief. Massaquoi still heads the Police as Inspector-General.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Timehri roundabout for completion this month – Patterson

first_imgThe country’s second roundabout is expected to be completed this month, Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson said.Patterson, during a brief interview with Guyana Times, said that the works have been progressing well and the facility should be completed shortly.“It’s being done at the moment, it should be finished shortly, most likely this month (but) I can’t tell you which day,” the Minister informed.Meanwhile, he noted that the Ministry is still trying to come up with the final design works for the Kitty roundabout which was commissioned since June 2018.The final works would include the landscaping of the $74 million structure.According to him, “It was not part of any contract or anything like that, it’s a service which we are looking to do so it hasn’t tendered as yet but we will get to it. There are various options so we are just consulting. We had several artist impressions which we haven’t decided on and when we decide on the final one we will know the cost and how we gonna do it”.He added that several persons from the general public have sent in suggestions for the design of the structure. Although the Ministry just wanted to put in flowers, he said that he is considering the suggestions received from all over the country. With regards to the Mandela Avenue/Sherriff Street Georgetown roundabout, Patterson informed that the site is currently being prepared.Back in January, Head of the Ministry’s Work Services Group (WSG), Geoffrey Vaughn told Guyana Times that the project is not only nearing completion but work should also commence shortly on the access road component.“That is about 80 per cent completed,” Vaughn revealed when asked for an update on the project, adding that the contractor has been able to resolve the issues he encountered with utility infrastructure.“The access road, (the contract) should be awarded shortly. Work should commence either early in February or later down (in the year),” the Public Infrastructure Ministry official added. In Auditor General Deodat Sharma’s 2017 report, it had been reported that the contractor, Gaico, was given advance payments totalling $30.8 million with $628,568 being paid to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) as withholding tax. The contractor, who was awarded the contract out of 11 bidders, was supposed to construct a single-lane rural roundabout and bypass road.last_img read more

District keen on dogs that sniff out drugs

first_imgBURBANK – Hoping to keep its campuses drug-free, the Burbank Unified School District board has renewed an $8,400 contract for drug-sniffing canines at seven schools. The district has contracted for the service since 2003 with Interquest Detection Canines of San Marino, which uses Labrador retrievers and other dogs to detect contraband at 91 schools across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Two high schools, two continuation schools and three middle schools will use campus discretionary funds to pay for the random searches, officials said. The program costs $1,500 a year for the high schools and $1,200 a year for the middle schools, officials said. The dogs most commonly detect marijuana and methamphetamines, followed by beer. jason.kandel@dailynews.com (818) 546-3306160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. FIANNA FAIL FEUD: NOW BYRNE CAMPAIGNERS ‘PLASTER DONEGAL WITH POSTERS IN NEW SNUB TO THE COPE’

first_imgSUPPORTERS of Fianna Fail MEP candidate Thomas Byrne have driven all the way to west Donegal to “plaster” the area with posters – in a new bid to oust Donegal MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher from his seat. There is already “deep anger” within Fianna Fail grassroots in the county over how they believe party HQ bosses want to shaft The Cope. The outgoing Donegal MEP is facing a battle to keep his seat with running ‘mate’ Thomas Byrne ahead of him in the polls. Fianna Fail is possibly facing a scenario where Byrne, who was parachuted into the contest by under-fire leader Micheal Martin, could win the seat from Gallagher. An increasingly bitter row however has seen “a wave of support” for Pat The Cope from grassroots Fianna Fail supporters not just in Donegal but throughout the 15-county constituency of Midlands North West.“They (Byrne’s supporters) are out to shaft Pat,” said one senior party source.“Pat entered the electoral pact in good faith but Byrne and HQ have thwarted his chances at every opportunity and there is considerable anger at how Pat has been treated. “Sure Byrne’s people have spent two days in west Donegal putting up extra posters of him; it’s like a two-fingered salute to The Cope and that’s no way to treat a loyal member of the party who has done everything asked of him by Fianna Fail for decades including giving up his Dail seat five years ago to go to Europe.“It’s shameful and to be fair Gallagher is getting a good reaction from people who aren’t exactly happy with Micheal Martin’s leadership at the moment.”Earlier this week sources told Donegal Daily that they suspect Mr Martin wants party pal Byrne elected at the expense of Gallagher.“It’s clear who everyone in headquarters wants to win the seat and that is Byrne,” said one life-long Donegal Fianna Fail member.“The strategy of backing Byrne will undoubtedly get him a seat in Europe, but it will be at the expense of The Cope, so it will be a very hollow victory for the party as a whole but it will be a victory for those who want Byrne in and that seems to be everyone at HQ.” FIANNA FAIL FEUD: NOW BYRNE CAMPAIGNERS ‘PLASTER DONEGAL WITH POSTERS IN NEW SNUB TO THE COPE’ was last modified: May 11th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:European electionsfianna failinternal rowPat The Cope GallagherrowThomas Byrnelast_img read more

Williams backers grow

Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! SAN FRANCISCO – Attorneys for Stanley “Tookie” Williams on Monday urged Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for the second time to cancel the Crips co-founder’s Dec. 13 execution and submitted what they said were signatures of 32,000 people supporting the clemency request. The lawyers told the governor that Williams, who has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize five times while on Death Row at San Quentin State Prison, could do more for society alive than dead. They said Williams, 51, is no longer a gang member and has not committed an infraction in prison since 1993.“It would be more consistent with the true goals of law enforcement and of society to acknowledge the value of Stanley Williams’ personal redemption and, more importantly, the value of his message to the youth of this state and this great nation,” attorney Peter Fleming Jr. wrote.Williams faces death by lethal injection for murdering four people in 1979 – Whittier convenience store clerk Albert Owens and three people at a Pico Rivera motel less than two weeks later. He denies his guilt, and has asked the California Supreme Court to reopen his case, alleging shoddy forensics wrongly connected him to three of the murders. As many as 45,800 people have registered their support for clemency on the SaveTookie.org Web site. Only 32,000 of the names were submitted to Schwarzenegger because the numbers kept growing by “thousands per day,” said Jonathan Harris, one of Williams’ clemency attorneys.Williams first urged the governor to commute his sentence two weeks ago.Monday’s petition was a rebuttal to a letter Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley sent to Schwarzenegger last week demanding that the execution go forward.Cooley told the governor that Williams “does not deserve your sympathy, leniency or mercy,” and in his letter included gruesome details of the murders and bloody pictures of the victims. The letter said the 1979 Los Angeles murders were “truly horrific,” and added that a jury determined that “Williams suffer the penalty of death for his crimes.”Williams has gained backing from Hollywood and civil rights supporters, who rallied outside San Quentin State Prison on Saturday. On Monday, The Rev. Jesse Jackson and celebrity activist Bianca Jagger, the former wife of Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, visited Williams at the prison just north of San Francisco.last_img read more
